I loved that this book was more a story about the town as opposed to the characters. Another thing about salem’s lot is the quality of writing by stephen king. While ben mears is ostensibly the lead character, others, such as the schoolteacher matt burke, the child mark.

King knows how to write a scene dripping with dark, menacing atmosphere. The lead protagonist is ben mears, a writer who spent part his childhood in this town, and has now returned to excise some demons of his past because when he was a child here he had a horrific and possibly supernatural experience in the presumed haunted. In 1975, a vampire comes to the small town of jerusalem's lot, maine.

Hints at what to come are plentiful for the keen observer. King was inspired by dracula to compose a novel about vampires. Building on the last point, i feel like jerusalem’s lot was an archetype of derry.

In dracula, the industrial west with all its technological advancements shines like a beacon, eliminating the shadows in which creatures like the count thrive, and he is indeed thwarted, sent scrambling back to the mountainous romanian wilds before the book’s climax. Much like derry, salem’s lot seemed like it’s own character in the story. ‘salem’s lot pulls this off spectacularly.

The audiobook of 'salem's lot is read by ron mclarty, a prominent audiobook reader. ‘salem’s lot is one of king’s most opaquely sacrilegious works, crushing and spitting out just about every catholic convention. Ben is a writer and decides to return to that small town in maine.

Salem’s lot was ultimately turned into multiple tv movies. The film merges two or three characters into one, something i didn't care for but understood considering the vast number of characters in the book. Whereas carrie was a short novel focusing mainly on a single character, ’salem’s lot is longer and far more complex.

And of course, this in a king novel. Then kids start to go missing. Stephen king's novel, salem's lot has been adapted into two separate miniseries over the years, both versions taking their own stab at the source material.
